Honest shop, good rates, safe for women I thought I’d done this review already—I brought in my battered 2008 Prius after years of avoiding a tune-up, because of my fear of being ripped off after leaving the best mechanic in the world back in California. The guys at Pete’s Auto Care gave me straight information about my car, explaining what it needed so that I could understand, and gave me great rates on the load of work it needed. When I realized what a good deal it was, I sent a card and some food, and it was later explained to me that this was weird, so I don’t recommend doing that. But otherwise, I highly recommend this shop, especially for women who need their car to run reliably for safety (and so also need not to be ripped off). TL:DR It meant a lot to me to have work done that I could trust; at the time, I was living in a women’s shelter, getting back on my feet after a chronic illness flare-up, and using my tax return to pay for the repairs. I had just started a new job and was looking for a place to rent, to move out of the shelter: having honest, reliable work done on the car so I could get to and from work and a new home meant the world. As it happens, shortly after the repairs, an unexpected and severe family emergency brought me back to California; so while I had to quit my job and abandon the move into the new place, it became a matter of basic safety that I be able to travel across several states and through the Nevada desert. The car struggled in the heat—it has an ongoing problem related to overheating that no one, even my wizard mechanic in the Bay, has been able to diagnose and fix—but it made it, and is still running. And, I just found out, there was actually more work done on the car than I knew or than the work order indicated. So yeah, don’t send a card or food, but do go to these guys.

I was referred to Pete’s Garage by a friend, and they turned out to be “the best” auto mechanic experience I ever had. CJ reviewed all my work invoices on the car from day one at the dealership so he would have a competent sense of the vehicle care my 2016 CRV had received over the years. He determined I did not need the maintenance the dealership recommended by seeing that certain procedures had been to often by looking at my paperwork. During the day in reviewing what my car needed per the dealership, none of it was necessary. Only thing required was an oil change. CJ’s honesty and determination to “do the honest/right thing” won me over. I won’t be back to the dealership again.

Although I feel like I could write several paragraphs about my experience with CJ, and his shop, I'm going to keep it brief.. This guy is straight up HONEST! I moved here 2 years ago from Las Vegas (NV), and had problems with every other automotive shop I encountered. Then I researched Pete's Automotive . I am now a life long customer. You cannot go wrong with trusting your vehicle with CJ and his mechanics. I purchased my 27 year old Toyota Corolla brand new and have found many shops that just don't want to work it. CJ had no problems with helping me out. His original diagnosis was correct, his prices were ( in my opinion) so reasonable I tipped him $50. Additionally! Never have I ever done that before! Honest and efficient. I had a transmission issue that required a specialist. They gave me a referral and didn't charge me for the evaluation. Very happy with the experience. ***Update*** Second experience and still very happy. Went back to Pete's with my 2018 Nissan Rogue. Had a terrible experience with my Insurance Company and the body shop that looked at my vehicle after a minor car accident. After 10,000 dollars in cosmetic repairs and body work, I received my car back. As soon as I drove it, I heard scraping and grinding noises. Long story short, the insurance and body shop refused to cover the damage as it was related to a part that wears out over time. They explained that this repair would not be covered due to the age and use of my car and it would cost me another 3,000 dollars to repair. I was beside myself. Here I have all this cosmetic damage repaired and yet the car is not safe to drive. I brought it to CJ at Pete's. CJ took the time to explain not just what the issue was but also, gave me options. Apparently, due to Nissan's design, I needed replace my cross frame (this was likely why the body shop's quote was so high) because the bushings and cross frame were originally sold as one piece. CJ offered to use an aftermarket solution, where he would use a torch to remove the old bushings and install a new 2 piece alternative replacement. He also advised that my shocks were about 70% worn. Not necessary to replace but cheaper in labor in the long run. Overall, the repair was literally half the cost. CJ gave me a viable solution at a fair price when I was in a time of need and my car is driving like new. This experience reinforced my loyalty to Pete's as this was my first actual repair. You can expect an honest repair and a fair price from CJ and Pete's. Disclaimer ***I am not a mechanic. I have attempted to repeat CJ's explanation to the best of my ability here. If there is any piece of this information that is not entirely correct, it is due to my own limited experience and not a reflection on the business***

***HIGHLY, HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!*** My Honda Element had the AC go out and had a busted transmission mount. I had taken it to a place in the East Mountains just for a diagnosis, but after a week of checking in every 2-3 days, every time I'd call they had a tone that I was bothering them and their answer was always a very curt, "I haven't even touched it yet." A colleague suggested I take it to Pete's instead. She gave them GLOWING reviews. I decided, "What have I got to lose? I've already wasted a week working from home with my car sitting at the other place." I called and spoke with CJ, the owner of Pete's. I told CJ what was up with the car and he told me the availability that they had to get it in for a diagnosis and to get it fixed if I wanted. Ended up taking it in. CJ explained to me kindly and in detail what was wrong with the AC and the transmission mount and what it would take to fix both. I had already done my homework and knew the dollar range I was likely looking at to fix it because when dealing with someone for the first time, you want to be informed. I decided to not fix the issues and instead get a different car. When I told CJ that I decided against fixing it and getting a replacement car instead, he gave me SUCH AWESOME ADVICE!! He asked what I was looking for in a replacement vehicle. I explained my needs and wants. CJ took a lot of time to have a couple conversations with me and told me based on his experience and knowledge what vehicles he recommended and why and what vehicles to absolutely not buy and why! I can't begin to explain how much time she money CJ saved me by having these conversations with me!! Not once did he make me feel like I was bothering him or asking stupid questions or anything of the sort. And he was doing this all for free. I really felt like I was establishing a relationship with my mechanic which is SO EXTREMELY IMPORTANT. It seemed like he was very invested in me making an informed decision on what car to purchase. I ended up finding a 2013 Honda Pilot with under 100,000 miles. I had the used car lot take it in to him and his folks have it a VERY THOROUGH inspection. He notified the salesperson what was wrong with it and what maintenance was coming due. He gave me the same info. This info helped me to negotiate the price down. Without his and his team's help, I wouldn't have gotten nearly as good of a deal. I can't say enough WONDERFUL things about Pete's!! CJ and his crew of mechanics are too notch!! I spoke with Randon and Phil as well, and they were just fantastic!! How often in this day and age do you get AMAZING customer service??? VERY, VERY RARELY. Most of the time we just settle for folks who couldn't care less about what they're doing. Pete's is the EXACT OPPOSITE of those experiences we've all settled for!! I have a timing belt and water pump needing replaced in the replacement vehicle I bought (CJ made me aware that it had never been done and was scheduled maintenance needing done soon) before a trip back to visit family and friends in Iowa. Guess where I'm taking it... TO PETE'S!!! We finally have a mechanic that we EXPLICITLY TRUST based on our experiences and people we spoke to who EXPLICITLY TRUST them as well!! What a relief!!

I live in NM but had to move to NC for two years recently and got NC plates. Now moved back home I needed to switch back to NM tags but my 2006 Nissan Pathfinder failed emissions. Reliable Nissan wanted $6700 to replace every sensor possible and a whole new catalytic converter set up. Obviously not going to even consider paying that I googled around town and found Pete's Auto with some just amazing reviews. So, I took it by the shop and worked with CJ and made an appointment to take a look. After a day he had me bring my rental car back and park it and take mine for a 30 minute drive. He had recalibrated the sensor settings and when I began the engine light was off, but when I came back it had come on. On the spot he recalibrated them again, and told me this time to take a 20 minute drive. This time when I returned the engine light had stayed off. He checked the calibration, and told me to go straight to the emissions testing hut down the street where it passed! When I came back to the shop and told him the good news and asked how much I owed him, what he told me was hard to believe. I don't want to say how much but it was practically free. Unbelievable to find such and honest mechanic in this day and age. Will definitely go back if I ever need any future work done on my SUV and will highly recommend to any and everyone. Pete's Auto rocks!

Have gone here a few times for various issues and Pete and his employees have always been helpful, thorough and fair. There's a bit of a wait to get your car looked at but it's worth it. Recently my husband went somewhere else for an emergency and we wish we had just waited to go to Pete's! Thanks!!

I was from out of town and looking for a technician to evaluate my auto HVAC. Every stop I made I met the same answer. Not today but tomorrow if you want to leave the car. Being from out of town posed a problem, so we declined the leave over night option. We then decided to leave as soon as possible. The office staff were curtious and willing to answer any questions we had. I will keep there address for further car issues

Took my car in that’s had a whiny noise for months, dealer said it was multiple issues and was gonna take a week. Pete’s not only diagnosed the problem but had it fixed within the day! They’re friendly and knowledgeable and will definitely be returning with any other car issues in the future.

I took my 19-yr old Scion XB there this morning and asked for an oil change and complete diagnosis as to whatever else was needed. For the past few years the Toyota dealership had been suggesting it needed all kinds of repairs adding up to thousands of $. My son had always told me, take it to Pete's because they will only recommend whatever is really necessary. So I finally did. CJ said it only needed a new battery because the current one was leaking. I HIGHLY recommend them!!

Very honest, friendly, trust worthy auto shop! Worked on my sons 24 year old car and didn't try to sell me things I didn't need, were up front honest and extremely reasonable pricing considering the cost of living going up! HIGHLY recommend them! As a female it can be scary taking a vehicle to a mechanic with fear of being taken advantage of they are not like that at all! I will continue to take my vehicles to them! I've been going to Pete's Auto Care since I was 16 (I'll be 38 this year) and they are the best! Pete and CJ have fixed every car I've ever owned. They are incredibly trustworthy, honest, knowledgeable, fair, and just all around good people. There was even a time I had an issue with my car when I was 19 and Pete came by on his way home to help me. I don't think you could find a better shop in Albuquerque and I'll give them my business as long as they're around.

This is an HONEST mechanic. I've been to over a dozen places in Albuquerque for car repair. One place quoted me $11k for a full engine replacement. Coast at Pete's for what ACTUALLY needed to be done? $1100. This is an HONEST mechanic.

Went to Pete's for the first time based on local reviews for a timing belt replacement. Their scheduling, communication and on-target estimate was great. Everything that was promised was delivered, along with excellent customer service. I would absolutely recommend them to others!
